Make Sugar Wax
Going to the salon to wax your eyebrows, legs, arms, or just about any hair is a pain. It is very pricey at some salons and why pay so much if you can do it yourself at home with three simple ingredients?
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoon lemon juice
- 4 tablespoon water
Steps
- Gather your ingredients. You simply need a cup of sugar, four tablespoons of lemon juice, and four tablespoons of water. The sugar can be any kind of sugar, white, dark, brown, but only granulated. Powdered sugar is not an option. Put the ingredients together in a cup or a bowl.
- Get a medium-big sized pot. The reason you need such a big pot for a small batch is that the mixture starts to bubble and it can overflow if you use a small pot.
- Pour in the mixture from the bowl into the pot.
- Turn the stove on to medium or in the middle of medium and high. When your mixture starts to bubble or become frothy, start mixing the batch with wooden or silver/metal spoon. Plastic spoons will melt.
- After the frothiness has appeared, keep mixing it occasionally for 5-8 minutes and start to take the pot off the stove and wait for the bubbles to disappear. Check the color and see the consistency of the wax. If it is very sappy and syrupy, and the color is a dark auburn or dark brownish, it is ready. If it is not like this, put it back on the stove and cook it some more.
- Once you take your wax off the stove, it's recommended to pour it into a jar immediately. If action is not taken then the wax will stick to the pot and end up ruining the pot or causing a major cleanup later. Find an empty jar that you won't be needing and let it cool for five to twenty minutes. The wax should be nearly solid, but still malleable. Liquid wax will burn you. If it is too hot to hold your finger to for more than a few seconds, let it cool some more.
- To apply the wax, use a popsicle stick to scoop up some wax, using your fingers to spread. Again, the wax should be malleable but still hot/warm: not liquid. Apply the wax to your destined location in the opposite direction of hair growth.
- If desired, get paper sheets and put them on top of the wax and smooth it out. Rip in the opposite direction of your hair growth like a bandage. Get a firm grip on it, and it may hurt a little bit. You can also use your fingers to roll or pull it off. If no hair was pulled off, your hair is too short to be waxed or you did not make the wax correctly.
Tips
- Be very careful on the measurement because otherwise your mixture won't be wax.
- Try to pay attention to the color of the bubbles. If you use brown sugar, the bubbles will probably already be brownish. Keep waiting for the bubbles to disappear when you take it off the heat and check the consistency.
- Definitely have a towel to sit on, a bowl of water to rinse your hands in and another bowl to chuck the used strips in it. It's a very sticky process!
- If you use white sugar: if the bubbles are not brown yet, then leave it on the pot. This might be obvious to others, it wasn't to me. I want to save you the time of checking.
- If you have an issue getting the "wax" off of your pan, boil water in the pan.
- Wash the pot after you've poured the wax into your container. That way the wax in the pot has had time to cool, your wax is cooling in the container and you don't have to struggle as much with getting it out of the pot!
- If you do have stuck on wax, use shortening to help loosen stuck-on bits.
Warnings
- Don't leave the wax in the pot or it will stay there. Cold water will just make the wax worse and harden it.
- Wait for the wax to cool. DO NOT USE LIQUID WAX! If you don't, you can really burn yourself.
- When waxing pubic/bikini area, be sure to thoroughly remove any residue, as sugar can alter vaginal pH and cause yeast infections.
