Make Sure You Do Not Over Pay at a Repair Shop

Making sure you do not get ripped off at a car repair shop can be tricky business. But by utilizing the following steps you will never overpay again.

Steps

  1. Make some phone calls. Call shops in your area and get them to give you quotes for the work you need done. (if you are not sure describe the problem to them and get quotes) Make sure you you call at least three shops. By doing so you can price match. Also do not be afraid to call Shop A again if Shop C gave you a lower price and ask them if they can lower their price. A lot of mechanical work is marked up so they can easily adjust their prices.
  2. Take your car to the lowest bidding shop. Go over their bid again. Make sure you know the out-the-door price (don't let them sucker punch you with hidden charges)
  3. Get the final price and included services in writing. Every jot and tittle should be written up.
  4. When work has started, only let the shop do the work you agreed on and have in writing. If they call and say they found something else was wrong with the car, NEVER SAY JUST FIX IT! Get quotes from them and call the other shops as well. (by doing so you can whittle down the price if the work is REALLY necessary).
  5. When you get your car, make sure the final invoice matches what you have in writing. Be reasonable and polite, but do not let them sneak in any extra charges.
  6. Drive away with your vehicle fixed and your wallet happy.
