Make Your High School's Cheer Team

Do you want to be a cheerleader? Cheerleaders pump up the crowd and rowdy up the players. They are admired by many little girls. Here are some tips to make your high school's cheer team.

Steps

  1. Be confident! Pretend you are the best girl or boy there and that there isn't a chance that you won't make it. The judges will notice and give you brownie points.
  2. Wear a school shirt, dance or athletic shorts, and cheer/tennis shoes. For your hair, pull it into a ponytail with a bow, leaving no bangs hanging out. Show your spirit by wearing your team colors. Your appearance should be very neat and clean.
  3. Ask questions if you can't get part of the routine, if you are being taught one. Coaches will see that you aren't shy and you are a hard worker.
  4. Practice the routine, and ask older girls about their first try out experiences. Learn as much as you can. As a bonus, the coaches will love that you really really want this.
  5. Be very outgoing and talk to other girls trying out. The coach will see that you are confident and that your team matters to you.
  6. As you go into the tryout, yell your team's name with a lot of spirit. Jump up and down and do a high kick with a high V. Smile and show the coach that your routine is going to be awesome.
  7. If you mess up, don't stop! Just keep doing cheer moves. If you forget the routine, try to do some cheer jumps. Never make it apparent that you messed up.
  8. Before you find out if you make it, think positive as if your routine was picture perfect.
  9. Don't be discouraged if you don't make it.

Tips

  • Always smile!
  • Smile, they don't want anybody shy!
  • Keep your toes pointed! Never ever flex your foot or feet during a jump or tumbling sequence.
  • Make sure you look ready and have a lot of spirit. Be energetic and loud!
  • Look up cheer routines, jumps, and stunts, and different moves.
  • Make tons of facial expressions - the judges love it! They judge you on your smile, facials and eye contact. If you can't make eye contact, look right on top of their head, so it seems as if you're looking at them directly.
  • If you don't know anyone go and talk to others. If you're shy you should probably talk to the coach and the senior cheerleaders, because they will be the one picking who is on the team, and if you show that you're social they will pick you.
  • If you don't make the squad, ask the coach what you can improve on for next year.
  • Also, say a cheer after you do a jump, tumbling or any other thing that your judges want you to do! It makes you look like you have lots of spirit! Plus, if your the first one to do it in your group then other girls copy they know that your meant to be a leader! A cheer- leader!

Warnings

  • Make sure you are super tight when you do your cheers/chants.
  • Have gobs of spirit going in and out and in between cheers but DO NOT say "whooo!" - the judges don't like it. Practice shouting your rally at home and make sure it's well thought out. Know what you're going to say and when to say it!
  • Do not overdo on the make up. You'll be sweating it off anyway!
  • If you know at try outs you know they are going to ask you to do a tumble routine try going to a cheer clinic or gymnastic clinic you will probably need to know how to do a back handspring and front handspring with and with out round-off.
  • If you are a veteran, avoid showing off in front of the newbies. Try to help them (the coach will give you designated time to practice your more advanced skills).
