Make a "Wave" Knot Bracelet

The wave knot bracelet is a quick, easy, and fun bracelet to make. You can use as many or as few strings or colors as you want, and they almost always come out looking awesome!

Steps

  1. You will need 4 colors, two strings for each color. This will give you a total of 8 strings in all.
  2. Cut the strings. They should be about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long, or more. Make them longer than you need, but not by too much, as you don't want to waste the string. A good thing to remember is that it's better to have too much string than not enough.
    • Have some string left over, so that you are able to tie the bracelet around your wrist.
    • The two strings that you use to tie around are not visible in your bracelet! It's best to make them a different color from the rest, so that you can tell them apart. They also don't need to be as long.
  3. Tie the strings into an overhand knot at the top. Put them in the order that you want to tie them in. The two strings that are to be used to tie around need to be next to each other and at one end of the bracelet. In these images, brown is being used as the tie-around strings.
  4. Take the first string closest to the tie-around strings. Tie a basic left or right knot (depending on how you set up your bracelet) on to both of your tie-around strings. Remember that you have to tie it two times for every knot! The string that you just tied with should now be on the other side of the tie-around strings.
  5. Repeat previous step with the next closest string to the tie-around strings. Note: the tie-around strings are the only strings that you are making knots on. You should only be tying two knots per string per wave.
  6. Continue tying strings in this manner until you have reached the end of the "wave." This means that all of the strings are on the other side.
  7. Taking the string that you just finished tying, turn it around and go over the tie-around strings for a second time. Your bracelet should look like the one in this image.
  8. Repeat the previous step and tie all of the strings back to the other side. They should look like this image.
  9. Continue tying in this manner until you have reached the desired length of your bracelet (or anklet).
  10. Tie the bracelet securely, and secure the knot with a small drop of glue if desired.
  11. Finished.

Tips

  • A safety pin also works well if you would like to make your bracelet while out in public. You can simply pin it to your pants, shirt, belt, shorts, whatever you like.
  • A clipboard is a good alternative to taping your project to a hard surface because not only will it save you tape, but it will also make your project portable.
  • Make sure you get the tension right- if the loops are too loose the bracelet won’t have waves, and too tight the loops won’t lay flat.

have fun

  • Remember to tie twice for each knot!
  • If you want the bracelet to be more wavy or squiggly, pinch the "wave" part or the bracelet while pulling outward.
  • If you're flexible, sit in a chair and put one of your feet on the chair. Loosely tie the bracelet to your toe or shoelaces.
  • If you want the bracelet to be a bit straighter, just pull downward on the waves.

Warnings

  • Use a clip board
  • You can't use regular embroidery thread for this; you need something thicker and stiffer so that the wave will actually hold up. Yarn is a good choice because of its thickness.
  • Don't use tape at all because your thread can come lose and you could mess up and not be able to untie it.
  • Don't be frustrated if it doesn't work out the first time just try again.
  • Be careful when using scissors or safety pins.
  • Don't tape your project to something valuable that you can't easily get tape off of.

Things You'll Need

  • Basic knowledge of friendship bracelet knots (aka "half hitch" or basic left and right hand knots)
  • String (embroidery floss), bumpy or plain
  • Scissors
