Make a Balloon Heart With a Twist

There was a little girl who loved hearts. She loved purple hearts, red hearts, and all colors of hearts. She had hearts sewn on her pink curtains, hearts sewn on her bedspread. Her mother told her that every heart she looked at one was a reminder of her mother’s love for her. And the balloon in this tutorial was her favorite––and now you can make it too!

Steps

  1. Use a balloon pump to inflate a red balloon leaving about 2 inches (5cm) uninflated at the end. Remove the balloon from the pump carefully, while pinching the end so that no air escapes.
  2. Tie off the balloon by using your other hand to pinch and then pull on the end to stretch it. Release the first hand and re-pinch the balloon a short distance away from the end. This action will give you enough room to tie off the balloon by making a loop and pushing the end through the loop and pulling it tight.
  3. Tie the ends of the balloon together to form a rough circle.
  4. Form the balloon into a heart by taking the middle of the side opposite the tie and form a fold that just fits into your hand. Squeeze your hand into a fist and hold it briefly. When you release your hand, the circle will now be heart shaped.
  5. Inflate three more balloons of three different colors. With each balloon, leave about 3 inches (7.5cm) uninflated at the end, and tie off the ends as before.
  6. Take the three balloons and align the inflation ends. Pinch all three balloons together about 1 inch (2.5cm) from the inflation end to form three small balls. Twist the balls to connect the balloons together.
  7. Braid the three balloons together while pushing the air towards the uninflated end. Twist the balloons together where the braid ends.
  8. Attach the heart to the inflation end by twisting one of the small balls around the base of the heart. Now you have a different and unique gift for your sweetheart!
  9. Finished.
