Make a Knitted Heart Shaped Box

This creation may look like you took a knitting class but as long as you can wind a ball of yarn around a few toothpicks and have a bit of spare time, you can create this work of art designed especially for your Valentine.

Steps

Preparing the heart template

  1. Create or purchase your heart template. The heart template will become the basis of your box so choose your size based on how big you’d like the box to become. Either:
    • Purchase a heavyweight cardboard heart from the local craft store; or
    • Make a cardboard heart. Print a heart template from the Internet and trace it over a piece of heavyweight cardboard. Cut out the template and use this as your base.
  2. Line the perimeter of the heart with toothpicks. Tap each toothpick (gently) into the perimeter of the heart. Add a dab of glue at the bottom of each toothpick to ensure it stays in place.
    • Space the toothpicks evenly around the heart, making sure that they aren’t touching but stay very close together.
    • Allow ample dry time before weaving the yarn.

Weaving the knitted heart-shaped box

  1. Tie one end of the yarn around the toothpick that forms the peak of the heart. Tie a tight knot toward the base of the toothpick.
  2. Weave the yarn around the toothpick next to the first toothpick. Then weave the yarn around the neighboring toothpick so that you create a zigzag pattern.
  3. Work your way around the entire heart. Then move the yarn up to the next row.
    • As you build the yarn weave, push the yarn downward to ensure a tight fit.
  4. Tie the final end of the yarn around the top toothpick and snip the end.

Decorating the knitted heart-shaped box

  1. Add trim and faux jewels. Line the top of the heart box with glue, then add the trim to the top of the box, lining the entire heart with trim.
    • Add trim around the bottom of the heart box, to match the top.
  2. Decorate the outside (and even inside) of the heart box with faux jewels and pearls. Use a dab of glue to hold decorations in place.
  3. Done. The heart box is now ready for use or for giving to your beloved as a customized gift.

Tips

  • Create a large heart using chopsticks and corkboard.
  • Add a lid to the heart box by covering it with faux jewels or trim. Use cardboard to trace the bottom of the box to match the exact heart size.
