Make a Birthday Card by Doodling

Doodles are random scribbles which can consist of swirls, shapes, designs, figures, or informal drawings. Doodles can add a whimsical touch to homemade birthday cards, providing an inexpensive technique to turn a plain-looking birthday card into a fancy one. And all you need is a basic black pen and a plain card. Go with the flow of your doodles and let them take you wherever they go!

Steps

Beginning the Doodle

  1. Set down a blank white card. Start to doodle basic swirls and fanciful swirls using a black pen. For the purposes of this article, these initial swirls will act as the foundational branches of a "doodle tree".

Forming a Tree Design from the Doodles

  1. Add leaves and flower buds to the swirls.
  2. Fill in the empty white spaces with assorted doodled flowers.

Adding a Colored Cut-Out

Adding extra pieces of paper is optional but it will add a professional touch that brightens up the plain black and white doodled front of the card.

  1. Cut out a semi-circle from a piece of colored card.
    • To draw semi-circles, use a compass or a saucer dish.
  2. Cut out another slightly smaller semi-circle piece that will fit just inside the first semi-circle piece. Draw a striped pattern on this cut-out card piece.
  3. Attach the larger semi-circle to an empty space on the doodled card. Use a glue stick for best results.
  4. Attach the smaller striped semi-circle to the larger semi-circle as shown.

Adding Birthday Greetings

  1. Hand write birthday greetings on a piece of white card.
  2. Cut out the greetings from the white card, in a semi-circle shape smaller than the other two semi-circles.
  3. Draw dashes around the white card as border for the greeting cut-out using the black pen.
  4. Mount the greeting cut-outs onto the striped semi-circle using the glue stick.
  5. Done.

Tips

  • Start with a fine-tip pen and build up the depth and thickness of the doodles as you go along. Once you feel more confident with doodling for decorative purposes, use a broader-tip pen for a bolder look to your doodle. And you can experiment using different colored pens; try colored pencils or paints to color in the doodles.
  • If you do not have the right tools for this then do not worry; just use similar markers or pens.
  • Stars, cars, trains, animals, food and alphabets are some other doodle ideas to guide your doodling creativity.
  • To prevent smudging and to ensure a long-lasting doodle, use a waterproof, light-fast, pigment-ink pen.
  • Be creative!!
  • You can also use a plain, solid colored card for a brighter, more powerful background. Black felt tips work as well as fine tips and thicker tips. If you wish, this card is great for holding money, gift certificates, or a gift card. It is also great for a heartfelt message to a loved one.
