Make a Cheerleading Megaphone

Whether you are making a cheerleading costume for Halloween or just trying to complete your cheerleading uniform as inexpensively as possible, this project is for you. Here is an easy, great, inexpensive way to create your own cheerleading megaphone.

Steps

  1. Wrap the poster board around a cone shaped object such as a plastic sand bucket, a floral styrofoam cone, or an upside down Stop Mildew Growing on Terracotta Pots flower pot. Tape the edges down where they meet- on the inside and the outside. The poster board will naturally form a cone shape.
  2. While still wrapped around your cone form, decide how tall you want the megaphone to be. Measure this length from the floor to the desired length and mark it on the poster board. Make more marks to this same height all the way around the top of the poster board. Cut around those marks to create the mouthpiece end of the megaphone. Repeat this along the bottom edge of the megaphone to create a nice opened end of your poster board cone.
  3. Cut the plaster gauze into strips. Following the package directions, dip each gauze strip into the water to activate the plaster and then apply each one, overlapping as you go, from top to bottom until you have covered the entire cone. Two layers of gauze are enough for a nice sturdy yet lightweight megaphone.
  4. Allow this to thoroughly dry perhaps overnight if necessary.
  5. Take the megaphone off of the cone form. To finish the top and bottom edges, cut several thinner strips of the plaster gauze, wet them down, and apply them over the edges.
  6. Once this is dry, apply several layers of the water based sealer.
  7. Paint and decorate the megaphone as desired.

Tips

  • The plaster gauze has one side which is caked with the plaster. If you can distinguish which side this is, try to place this side up when applying the gauze. Once the gauze is in place, rub the plaster down with your fingers to create a smooth non gauzy surface.
  • Once the plaster strips are completely dry, you can make an even smoother surface. Apply a layer of tissue paper over the gauze. The water based sealer will work to glue down the tissue paper to the surface. You can even choose a color of tissue paper that will compliment your team colors. It may take a little practice to apply this thin paper without any wrinkles. Then add more sealer over the tissue paper.
