Make a Chip Butty

A Chip Butty is a chip sandwich.

The natural home of the chip butty is Britain (a chip butty is an exotic beast in the USA); therefore the term nearly always refers to a sandwich made from what is called a "chip" in Britain - a fried length of potato, a french fry, NOT the US version of potato chip ("crisp" in Britain,or "potato wafers" elsewhere). Ideally, make with home fries (fatter than French fries).

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of white/whole wheat bread
  • Hot chips
  • Ketchup
  • Butter

Steps

  1. Butter your bread. Make sure you have a good layer of butter on each slice of bread - chip butties are well known for being sopping with butter! Only real butter will do, no cheating with margarine.
  2. Add the chips. Place a heaping layer of hot chips on your bread. Chips (called french fries in the USA) are what give the chip butty its name. The chips should make up the main portion of the sandwich.
  3. Add optional toppings. A chip butty should be enjoyed with a few dollops of Make a Tomato Free Ketchup or HP sauce; however, you can add an extra surge of flavour by adding cheese, sliced meats, tomato, or your favourite sauces. Salt & pepper would not be out of place on a chip butty, either.
  4. Finished.

Tips

  • Don't forget to "squish" the sandwich down - for some reason this always makes it taste better
  • Use good quality chips/fries.
  • Only use real butter.
  • Malt vinegar tastes lovely on chips.
  • Use fresh bread.

Warnings

  • This is not the healthiest choice for a sandwich, because it is extremely high in cholesterol and carbohydrates. Eat with caution.
