Make a Choc Orange Pudding in the Microwave

Chocolate and orange are two flavors that always work well together. In this pudding version, the pudding is chocolate and the sauce provides both the orange flavor and an additional chocolate touch. It's easy to make and is often a hit with the kids.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup self-raising (self-rising) flour
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup caster (superfine) sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence (extract)
  • 25g butter

For sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Cream (optional)

Steps

Preparation

  1. Grease a {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} casserole glass bowl or other suitable microwavable bowl.

Making the Pudding Batter

  1. Sift together the flour and cocoa powder in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the sugar, milk and vanilla essence (extract). Stir well.
  3. Melt the butter in a separate small bowl in the microwave at "medium" (505) for 1 minute.
  4. Pour the melted butter to the bowl with the pudding batter. Mix well.
  5. Spread the pudding batter into the casserole bowl.

Making the Sauce

  1. Make the sauce. The sauce is added to the pudding batter before cooking. It won't mix into the batter but it will form a moist outer layer that slightly seeps into the cooked pudding and creates a lovely, gooey sauce.
  2. Mix the cocoa powder, orange juice, brown sugar and water in a jug (or other container with a pouring lip). Stir well to combine.
  3. Pour the sauce evenly over the pudding batter. Don't stir it! The sauce will settle on top on its own; if stirred, it'll combine with the batter, which you don't want happening.

Microwaving the Pudding

  1. Cover the glass bowl with a piece of cling wrap (plastic food wrap suitable for the microwave). Or, put a suitable lid (glass) on top.
  2. Place the pudding into the microwave oven. Cook the pudding on high for 7 minutes. Remove when cooked, and let it stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Serve. Scoop into serving bowls, making sure to get sufficient sauce for each pudding portion. Eat and enjoy!
