Make a Cinnamon Pretzel

Hot, straight-from-the-oven, soft pretzels are easy to make any time of the day. And adding a cinnamon topping turns them into a special treat, to rival any bakery treat. So, why buy them at the mall, or at the movies, when you can make them at home at anytime for half the price? Here's what to do.

Ingredients

For the Pretzels

  • 1 loaf frozen white bread dough, thawed
  • Flour, for dusting surface
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup coarse salt

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 honey-sugar glaze

Steps

Making the Pretzels

  1. Separate the dough into 14 sections. Lightly sprinkle flour on a large board or counter top.
  2. Roll each section of the dough in a 14-16 inch (35-40cm) rope. Form the rope into the shape of a pretzel.
  3. Put the pretzels in the refrigerator until you are ready to boil them.

Boiling and Glazing the Pretzels

  1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF/200ºC.
  2. Add 4 quarts/{{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} of water to a large pot and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and add the pretzels, three at a time.
  3. Cook about 2 minutes until you see them rise to the surface. Carefully remove them and place on a paper towels to drain.
  4. Place each boiled pretzel on a buttered sheet pan, separating them about 3 inches/7.5cm apart.
  5. Brush each pretzel with a beaten egg. Sprinkle on the cinnamon or brush on the cinnamon glaze. To make the glaze, use a small bowl and add the topping ingredients, combining it with 1-2 Tbs water.

Baking the Pretzels

  1. Bake about 15-20 minutes until the pretzels are brown.[1]
  2. Remove from the oven. They're now ready for serving while still deliciously warm.

Tips

  • Soft pretzels are best eaten freshly-baked and salted on top.
  • Dip the pretzel in a dipping sauce of choice, or mustard for a different taste.
  • The thickness is determined by how thinly you roll the dough.

Warnings

  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the pretzels from the boiling water. Be careful not to burn yourself.
