Make a Flat Bun for a Christian Hair Covering

For those Christians who cover, finding a method to make a bun for our hair is sometimes a never ending quest. Here is how to make a relatively flat bun. Great for "Charity" and hanging type covers and hair that reaches at least to the shoulders.

Steps

  1. Gather your hair just above the nape of your neck.
  2. Snap a large barrette upside down at the base of your hair. A ponytail holder will also work for thicker hair.
  3. Slightly twist hair and pull upwards.
  4. Now double the tail over, and tuck beneath. If you have really long hair, you should "wrap" your hair around your hand, tuck in the tail and gently slide your hand out. This will take practice.
  5. With hairpins, pin the top down.
  6. With a smaller barrette or bobby pins (bobby pins don't work as well, but still can be used), secure the tail to the head by sliding it under the top half, but above the bottom half and securing to the head.
  7. Make sure the bun is secure. Add pins to the sides or tops as you need them.
  8. Wrap a hairnet snugly over it. If you have to, double it over the bun.
  9. Put your cover on and voila!

Tips

  • Get sturdy hair pins that will last. You can find some at some of the listed websites.
  • Put a little bit of mousse in your hair while it's damp and try to do your hair while it's moist as well. It will help your hair stay put.
  • Remember, it doesn't have to look pretty! The hair net will help with hairs sticking out and it's going under a cover anyway, so nobody will see it if it's a complete - but flat! - mess anyway.
  • It takes practice, especially if you're used to the big round buns.

Warnings

  • Be gentle with your hair. Condition it and only wash it every other day or so. It makes your hair stronger.

Things You'll Need

  • Big barrette/regular ponytail holder, about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} long or so.
  • Small barrette. The thin silver ones are good.
  • Hair net. Try to find a relatively tight one, not all loose.
  • Hair Pins/Bobby pins.
  • Patience!
