Style Your Hair Into an Upside Down Bun

An upside down bun is a stylish yet fairly carefree way to keep hair off your face and shoulders. This bun isn't as neat as a tighter version of the classic bun but it is ideal for fun, casual occasions and since it's easy to do by yourself, it's a good one for any time you're on-the-go.

Steps

  1. Tie your hair into an upside-down ponytail. To do this, simply tie a low ponytail. Then, directly above the elastic, create two sections of hair. Pull the ponytail through the gap that has been created.
    • As you're doing this, keep a hair tie on the wrist of your dominant hand.
  2. Hold the end of the ponytail and pull it straight up, towards the sky.
  3. Start twisting the hair around your finger.
  4. Pull the twist straight down. Winding the twist around the base of the ponytail, pull to the left, then finally upwards. Continue until the bun is drawn together tightly.
  5. Hold the bun tightly in your dominant hand. With your other hand, bring down the hair tie you placed on your wrist at the beginning and firmly wrap around base of the bun. You may find it easiest to use two hair ties to secure the bun for physical activities, like running. However, for most non-strenuous activities, the bun should hold with a single tie.

Alternate method

  1. Make a bun by continually twisting your hair.
  2. Separate the hair directly above it and pull the bun through. Done.
  3. Finished.

Tips

  • Making the twist tight and using damp hair can help hold this upside down bun together better.
  • Make sure the bun isn't too loose!
  • Don't overdo the hairspray; usually, you won't need it. The latest trend is to have a little hair in your face or a little hanging down, but if you don't like that, one or two little clips can help tidy it up.
  • This is great for summer, going out and for other daily events. It's not recommended for any formal meeting though, as it tends to loosen fairly quickly, leaving a messier, more casual look.
  • Bobby pins are an important material when trying to keep your hair in an Upside Down Bun. They are basically the main material needed. You wouldn't want all of your hard work to fall apart.
  • Remember that practice makes perfect! If you don't get it the first time keep trying. You'll get it soon enough!
  • Keep your hair wet and knot free when doing this.

Warnings

  • If you have a lot of hair and find that it weighs you down and causes headaches, try the bun out before you wear it to an event or work. Otherwise, you might have to take it out halfway through the day!

Things You'll Need

  • Elastic/other suitable hair bands or big spider clips
  • Accessories such as clips, etc. if desired
