Make a Hot Whiskey

Hot whiskey is an aromatic drink that will warm you up nicely on a cold day. It's also a great drink to help calm the pain of a sore throat and is a comforting infusion when suffering from a cold or a flu.

Steps

  1. Fill the kettle and boil some water.
  2. While waiting, take a decent-sized glass, something like a red wine glass will do, and put a good teaspoon of brown sugar into it. White sugar just won't do, though honey might.
  3. Add enough whiskey. It's up to you how much, but be good to yourself. Bear in mind that a cold or 'flu is a devil of a thing altogether, and may require a sizable measure of spirits to see it off.
  4. Give the whiskey and brown sugar mixture a bit of a stir and try to dissolve the lumps. (Give yourself a swig of the whiskey to make sure it's okay. Whiskey goes off, you know!)
  5. Rinse a lemon. Take a slice from the middle, about a quarter of an inch or 5mm thick. Remove the pips (seeds)––these can ruin the taste!
  6. Put a clove in each segment of the lemon slice. Make sure that they're stuck in firmly, perhaps even poking out the far side. You don't want them to come flying out when you stir it––that'd be a fierce embarrassment altogether.
  7. The kettle should be boiled by now, so pour the water into the glass over the back of a spoon, so as not to scald the whiskey.
  8. Give it a good stir and fully dissolve the brown sugar, and as its spinning, drop in the cloved slice of lemon.
  9. Tie a wee napkin around the neck and away you go. Repeat until symptoms disappear. You may need more whiskey!

Tips

  • Best with Bushmills or Powers whiskey. Not great with Jameson, surprisingly.

Warnings

  • Be careful pouring boiling water into a glass, it could break the glass.
  • Never drink it while it's still boiling!
