Make a Keg BBQ
Taking an empty keg and turning it into something useful, like a Grill!
Steps
- Buy a keg from a scrap dealer, or buy one from a brewery that is retiring a keg that no longer holds pressure. Cutting into a keg that you (or someone else) got full of beer may be cheaper, but it's illegal. Your deposit on the keg is not purchase of said keg; they cost the brewery much more.
- Take the saw and cut the keg in half long ways, so you have 2 even halves of the keg, this is basically your grill.
- Decide which side will be the back and attach the hinges so that the keg can open and close freely. And on the other side (front) attach the wooden lined handle so you can open and close it without touching the keg. It's going to get damn hot when you're cooking.
- Inside the keg, cut your grill/grate so that it fits down into the keg to the point where you can get charcoal underneath it and be able to cook comfortably. Make sure it's not too deep into the keg; again, the metal gets hot, you don't want to burn yourself reaching too far down.
- Find a way to mount it. You need to get creative with this part. We hung ours from a hook by chains, but however you decide to do this is up to you.
- Load the sucker up with charcoal and lighter fluid, light, and enjoy!
Warnings
- Make sure it is mounted securely, you don't want a hot keg rolling around the yard.
- The outside of the keg will get very hot, so be careful.
Things You'll Need
- Heavy duty saw (to cut the keg)
- Drill with larger bit
- Some sort of handle (wooden-lined so it doesn't get hot, like on normal BBQs)
- 2-3 Hinges
- A grill grate to put inside for a place to cook on
