Make a Ninja Star out of an Old CD

As more and more CDs become unwanted through old age, overuse or superseding, finding things to do with them other than tossing them has become a fun craft movement. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to turn an unwanted CD into a ninja star, perfect for decorating your ninja themed crafts for room space.

Steps

  1. Draw the star design on the CD. Use a ruler to keep the lines straight and a marker suitable for the CD surface. Draw the design to look like a traditional ninja star. If it helps, draw a template on thin card first, cut this out, then trace around it onto the CD.
  2. Cut the ninja star shape out using scissors. Be aware that this is messy, as the CD cover rips off while cutting. Lay down newspaper to keep the workspace clean.
    • Cutting can be facilitated by softening the CD, so that it doesn't crack. Fill a sink or basin with hot water and let the CD rest in this for 5 or so minutes before cutting it.
  3. Straighten it around the edges to make it look neater. Using sandpaper will make it smooth.
  4. Make use of the CD-ninja-star. It is fragile, so it's not recommended that you throw it because it may break. This ninja star is best for decorative purposes. Ideas include gluing it onto a craft project, jazzing up a dull bag or lunchbox by sticking it into place, hanging it from a mobile or using it as a wall or window decoration, use it as a coaster for cold drinks,

Tips

  • If you want to try throwing it, only do so outdoors, away from people and animals, but throwing it or using it as a weapon is not recommended because it may break.
  • Use unwanted or blank CDs. Have several in case they break while cutting out the shape.

Warnings

  • Don't try using the CD in your disk drive after cutting it into a ninja star; it might break the drive.
  • Never throw these at people or animals; they can cause an injury.
