Make an Eight Point Star

A proper eight point star, with straight lines and symmetry, is not as easy to create as you might think! However, it's easy to learn how to draw an eight point star by either using your computer or with a pencil and some paper. Start at Step 1 and try the first two methods to try your hand at the eight point star, or skip to the third and fourth methods if you'd like to try on a computer.

Steps

Pencil and Paper

  1. Draw a square. You can use a ruler to get perfect straight lines.
  2. Rotate the paper by 45 degrees and draw a second square directly over the first square.
  3. Erase the lines in between.

Pencil and Paper

  1. Follow the numbers on this pictorial representation. You can also loop the ends rather than making a point, and that also creates a cool design, almost like a daisy.
  2. Try tracing it with your computer mouse first. Follow the numbers with your mouse, and the faster that you do it with your mouse, the faster you'll be able to do it with a pencil.
  3. Make the 8 dots on your paper so that you know where your pencil goes. After that, the motion of your hand will make it so you don't need them anymore.

Using Microsoft Word

  1. Choose "Insert" from the menu and insert a new drawing.
  2. Choose "Auto Shapes" from the "Drawing Toolbar" and open the "Stars and Banners" item. Select the eight point star.
  3. Draw your star. Hold "Shift" if you want an equal shaped star.

Using Your Computer's Drawing Program

  1. Draw a square with any drawing program you have.
  2. Draw another square next to the first one.
  3. Rotate the second square by 45 degrees. Each program has its own ways of rotating, but usually there is handle you can use to rotate.
  4. Move the second, now rotated, square over the first square and line them up so they form the eight pointed star.
  5. Erase the lines in between with your program's eraser function.
