Make a Play Sword and Shield
Have you ever wanted to be a medieval knight before? Well, here's your chance! Just follow these instructions to make an awesome medieval sword and shield!
Steps
- Find a large cardboard box.
- Cut two sides of the box off.
- Draw your own design of a sword and shield on it (it should be large enough so that the shield can cover your side and so you can handle the sword easily). Once you are done designing them, cut them out with scissors .
- Know that the sword might be a little flexible, so you'll have to reinforce it. To reinforce it, take a large ruler, and cut the ruler (with a saw) until it has the same point as your sword and is the same size as the cardboard cutout.
- Line the ruler up with the side of the cutout, and tape the top part (above the handle) with duct tape (don't use the cheap kind, it could be less willing to stick).
- Slide your finger down the duct-taped side, right where you can feel the edge of the ruler (the edge on the inside of the sword). Press down really hard to make a blade edge.
- Get yarn the color that you want the handle of the sword to be. Make sure the yarn is in one piece, to minimize bumps from knots on the handle.
- Wrap the yarn very tightly around the handle, make sure there is no gap between them every time you go around.
- Repeat number 8 again, only do it over the first bunch of yarn. This will make your handle softer and easier to grip.
- Now that you have the handle and blade done, color the parts that still have cardboard showing. BE CREATIVE!!! Use a wide variety of colors. Now you have a wonderful sword and shield play set!
- Now that now that you have finished your sword, you can move on to the shield. Get the cardboard cutout that you had cutout before, and turn it over to the side that you don't want the design on.
- Get two pieces of duct tape, (one should be longer than the other one)
- Stick the two together, but make sure you leave sticky edges on both side so you can stick it onto the back of the shield. This will make the place that you put your arm through to hold it.
- Position it on the bottom left side of the shield if you are right handed, and if you're left handed, put it on the bottom, right side of the shield.
- Repeat number 14, only make the duct tape pieces smaller, because this will be where you grip the shield.
- Stick this on the corner diagonal from the arm rest.
- Reinforce the grip and rest with smaller pieces of duct tape, so they won't come off when you are swinging the shield around.
- Now that you have finished the back, turn it over and draw out your own coat of arms (design) on the front.
- Once you are sure you have the design you want, paint your design with any color you want.
- Let it dry for about day (depending on the paint you used, it might be longer or shorter).
- (OPTIONAL) Get some tin or aluminium foil and wrap it around the sword blade and tape it together to get the shine and metal-like color.
Tips
- If you want to be even more creative, find (or make) a cape to go along with it!
- If you cut your sword tip a little sharp, trim it down or put some more duct tape over it.
- You can also use Latex and Larp made weapons as they are more durable and do not harm at all. The weapons made with these materials are looks similar to that of original weapons.
Warnings
- Always keep first aid box ready for primary treatment in case of any tragedy.
- Tip might be sharp, which could result in injury if not careful.
- Scissors, knife, and saw should be handled by adult.
