Make a Poop Tube

When you are going big-wall climbing, or alpine climbing/camping and you either don't have or don't want to use those pack out bags with the targets that you get from the National Park Service, here is another option for packing out your poop.

Steps

PVC Pipe Method

  1. Cut a piece of 4-inch (10-cm) PVC pipe to the desired length. This should be dependent on your own toilet routines and the number of days you will be backcountry. {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} is normally good.
  2. Glue a solid cap to one end of the tubing.
  3. Glue a threaded fitting to the other.
  4. Tie a length of cord to the screw cap and tether it to the tube.
  5. "Go" in basket style coffee filters, then place the soiled coffee filter into a plastic bag. Place the bagged prize into tube. This is way easier and more sanitary than trying to aim for {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} tube.
  6. Empty the contents of the tube into a trash bin when you get to the ground. Then clean and sanitize the tube so you can re-use it on your next big wall.

Dry Bag Method

  1. Use a converted dry bag as a lighter, less bulky alternative to the "old school" PVC poop tube. The poop bag technique is increasingly popular among big wall climbers.
  2. Buy a dry bag from any sporting goods store that sells rafting supplies. Usually the medium size will suffice
  3. Place some kitty litter at the bottom of the bag to help absorb excess moisture and odor
  4. Clip a carabiner to the bag and tape it in place so that the poop bag can be easily attached to your haul bag.

Tips

  • Carrying a little kitty litter to sprinkle in will cut back on the smell.
  • Take toilet paper. You may as well, as you will carry out the poop anyway and a little extra paper won't make a difference.
  • Please dispose of the waste responsibly when returning from a trip.
  • Poop in a paper bag which you then place in the tube or dry bag. It's easier to clean and reuse this way.
  • Fold the fresh paper bag over the edge of the tube to decrease the "damage" from poor aiming or a shifting tube.

Warnings

  • When the time comes, be careful to move your rope aside.
  • "Aiming" can be difficult, particularly for a {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} hole. Get close to the tube when taking a dump.
  • Obvious as it might seem, don't urinate in your tube. It's extra weight to carry as well as increases the possibility of leakage.
