Make a Shirley Temple Cocktail

Sometimes called the Shirley Temple, sometimes the Roy Rodgers, rumor has it that this refreshing drink was made for child stars who couldn't drink with the adults.[1] There are as many versions as their are kids, but the basics are simple -- soda and grenadine.

Ingredients

Classic Cocktail

  • 3 oz. (90 ml) orange juice
  • 6 oz. (180 ml) ginger ale
  • 2/3 oz. (20 ml) grenadine
  • ice
  • maraschino cherry (optional)
  • lemon slice (optional)

Simple Cocktail

  • 1/2 cup lemon-lime soda (Sprite, Sierra Mist, etc.)
  • 2-3 tablespoons grenadine syrup
  • maraschino cherry

Adult Version:

  • Either Recipe + 1 oz light rum or vodka

Steps

  1. Fill glass half-way with ice. No one likes a cold drink! While you can use a cocktail mixer for this drink, it is usually made in the glass, as shaking can ruin your carbonation.
    • Typically, this drink is served in funky glasses -- Tom Collins and Hurricane glasses are the most common.[2]
  2. Pour ginger ale and orange juice over ice. If you don't want to use ginger ale, substitute a simple lemon-lime soda. The orange juice is also optional, as many bartenders now use an orange slice instead.[3]
  3. Pour grenadine over everything and stir. Simply add it in until you have a light pinkish color to the drink. Grenadine is very sweet, so use it sparingly, only adding more when requested. The final drink should be the color of a gorgeous sunset.[4]
  4. Garnish with a lemon or orange slice and a cherry (optional). While optional, there are few kids who won't want the classic, sweet cherry in the middle of their cocktail. The orange slice is very common, especially if you don't use orange juice in the drink.
    • When serving to kids, a little garnish goes a long way. Toss in a straw, paper umbrella, or swizzle stick -- anything to make it a little "special."[5]
  5. Optionally, top with a splash of rum or vodka to make the adult version. If you're not a child, but still want the joy of a good Shirley Temple, you can spice things up with a dash of light rum or vodka. Just make sure none of the kids pick it up by mistake![4]

Tips

  • You can substitute the ginger ale with a lemon-lime soda such as sprite or 7-up.
  • Add an ounce of raspberry sourpuss to make it non-virgin and it gives a nice tart flavor to the sweetness.
  • Maraschino cherry syrup can be used instead of the grenadine syrup.
  • For a variation, use a lime instead of lemon slice.
  • Add more grenadine for sweetness.
