Make a Simple Animation in GIMP or Photoshop

Have you even wanted to make a little animation without learning Flash or even getting it? Well, now you can! All you need is a program that can control the layers. GIMP is recommended because it's free and easy!

Steps

  1. Open up the program.
  2. Make something simple, like a smiley face winking or a stickman walking.
  3. Find the layers option and make a new layer.
    • Exception: if you are making anything like a smiley face doing something, make a copy of the layer and don't make a white layer.
    • If you are making something wink, or doing something, make about four copies so it will run smoothly.
  4. Make the next frame(layer) art.
  5. Repeat the previous step until you have every frame done.
  6. Saving isn't as easy as [untitled].jpg or .png, you have to save it as .gif, so: [untitled].gif, gif can not handle layers, so it will turn the layers into frames, and in most art programs, like Gimp, you can pick how many frames per-second/milli.

Tips

  • You can use Pivot Stickfigure Animator for Stickman projects, which is free.
  • This will take at least ten minutes.

Warnings

  • Some programs won't let you work on it, so always have two copies of something. Make one a "work-on" copy (in the GIMP, this is called a .xcf file), name it the same only put something like "work_on" at the end so you don't get confused. Keep up the program while you save it, because you can view it and if you don't like something you can always change it.
  • Every program has a different way of searching frames. Find out the specifics for your chosen program, because if you don't, it will cause problems.
