Make a Visor out of a Baseball Cap

Do you have a great cap but, for whatever reason, you wish it was a visor instead? Worry not! In a few simple steps you can have that awesome visor you desire.

Steps

  1. Grab your cap, something to mark with, and a pair of sharp scissors.
  2. Decide how thick you would like your visor to be and mark your cut line. Make sure any part of the design you would like to keep is under your cut line. Keep the cut above the band at the bottom of the cap to provide a more stable visor.
  3. Start snipping away. Try not to stretch the fabric while you cut as this will create an uneven line.
  4. Remove the tape (if that's what you marked with).
  5. Wear your stunning new headgear and impress your friends.

Tips

  • To keep nylon or polyester mesh (such as that on a Trucker Hat) from unraveling, melt the edge with the heat from a small flame (such as a lighter). Do NOT light the material on fire.
  • Marking with tape allows adjustments to the line and the line is completely removable. If using a marker, be sure to draw the line a little high and cut on the bottom edge so there is not a line around the top of your visor.
  • If left untended, the edge of the visor will fray. To prevent this, sew a hem around the top edge, or just under the top edge to allow a controlled amount of fray.
  • An adjustable cap may work better than a fitted cap. It provides a starting place for the cut, plus the resulting visor will be adjustable which makes it a more flexible accessory.

Warnings

  • Again, if melting the edge of synthetic mesh, be careful not to light the material on fire.
  • Observe standard safety procedures when working with scissors. Be sure not to get your fingers caught between the cutting edges as you work.

Things You'll Need

  • A cap with a brim
  • Scissors
  • Something to mark with - masking tape or a marker
