Make a Wire Bow Ring

Whether you want to make a present for a friend or something new for yourself, this ring is the perfect addition to any jewelry collection. Unlike many handmade rings, it doesn't have a bulky, over-the-top appearance and is quick, easy, and cheap to make. If you have some extra wire lying around and fancy a quick project, give this ring a go.

Steps

  1. Find something the right size to make your ring on. You don't need a ring mandrel to be able to make rings; any round object the size of your finger will do. Try the lid of a nail polish bottle or a mascara tube.
  2. Wrap a piece of fairly thick wire around the object once, leaving about 3 inches (7.5cm) to work with on either side. The loop will become the ring, while the overhang on either side will become the two halves of the bow. If you're not sure what thickness you want, try 20 gauge.
  3. Bend one of the overhanging ends into a loop so that it forms half a bow. Pull it outwards, then bend it up, over, and back to the center.
  4. Bend the other overhanging end into a complimentary loop and clip the excess wire from the ends of the bow. If desired, you can also curl both ends of the bow up slightly (like the ends of a curly mustache).
  5. Wrap a piece of thin wire in a contrasting colour around the centre of the bow and clip away the excess. This will hold the bow in place. For a funky loop, wrap lots of wire as shown below. For something subtler, wrap the wire only a few times (or even wrap it in an X shape).
  6. File all the wire ends down so that they are smooth. If this isn't done, you risk cutting into your fingers.
  7. Put the ring on. Most people wear these so that the ends of the bow point towards the arm.
  8. Finished.
