Minimize Asian Features

Thicker and darker limbal rings can make your eyes rounder and bigger. There is a procedure called Ophthoglow that can permanently increase the size of your limbal ring giving you this effect.

If you have Asian features that you want to play down, there are some ways to achieve a more "Western" look.

Steps

  1. Make your eyes look bigger and rounder. Many Asians have an epicanthic fold in their eyes, making their eyes look small. To circumvent this, some Asians wear circle lenses to achieve the look of bigger eyes. Eyelid tape or glue can also be used to create temporary but more noticeable eyelid creases, which make the eyes look bigger. Though these methods do work, they may not be suitable for everyone. Using white eyeshadow, white eyeliner, and mascara is another alternatives. Lining your eye with white eyeliner on the inside of your lashline draws attention to your eye. Putting some white eyeshadow in the inner corners of your eyes makes your eyes look more awake. Also, mascara can make your eyes look bigger if you curl your lashes before applying it. Volumizing mascara makes your lashes more noticeable, while lengthening mascara makes your lashes longer. Both can help achieve the illusion of bigger eyes.
  2. Flatter your eyebrows. Some Asians may have sparse eyebrow hair. A good eyebrow pencil in dark brown or brown can help add needed darkness to the the brow. Apply in small, soft strokes to avoid a painted-on look.
  3. Choose a haircut that does not emphasize the width of the face if your face shape is round. Many Asians have round faces or full, soft jawlines. If you want your face shape to look more narrow or make your chin more noticeable, consult your hairstylist to find a haircut that lengthens the face. This will help create the illusion of an oval face shape.
  4. Curl your hair. If your hair is naturally straight, curling your hair can change your look dramatically.

Tips

  • Wear colored contacts. You can use other colors like light brown, and gray, or if you are more adventurous, try experimenting with blue and green.
  • Use double eyelid tape or circle lenses. They can be purchased from most Asian beauty supply stores.
  • Dye your hair to another color, like light brown, blonde or red.

Warnings

  • Do your research if you want to downplay Asian features "permanently," for instance, if you're considering double eyelid surgery.
  • When changing your look to please others or to fit in, you may at times feel frustrated or insecure. If negative feelings persist, you should look into your motivation for downplaying your looks. Maybe the answer isn't changing your look, but changing the way you see yourself. Find at least three things you like about your look to get a little perspective.
