Mount a Tire Using Ether
Mounting a tire with ether is dangerous and can cause serious injury or even death. It involves a loosely controlled explosion to seat the tire bead onto the rim. This article is for information purposes only; if you're curious about how it works, read on. However, actually using these steps is not recommended; you assume all responsibility if you attempt this procedure.

Steps
- Start by placing the tire/wheel combo on the ground. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, free of other flammable vapors.
- Remove the little valve core inside of the tire valve stem, called the 'Shrader valve'. This valve needs to be removed to prevent the combustion gasses from exploding the tire when you ignite the ether. Failure to do this may be deadly. Make sure valve stem core is removed. Save valve core for later.
- Quickly and in a circular motion, spray the ether around the tire pointing it straight down and at the tire where it mounts to the rim.
- Spray a line of ether from the bead of the tire down to the tread part of the tire. This is for your fuse. You should only spray two to three seconds worth of ether. If you spray a little more, wait about 30 seconds before lighting.
- You don't want to have too much ether in there; remember you are getting to make a small explosion. It is better to have to do it a second time with a little more, than to end up with an injury or death.
- Get your lighter and get ready to light the 'fuse' that you made with ether. Crouch down and protect yourself. Outstretch your arm and light the fuse you made. There will be a loud 'whoosh' as the ether ignites, expanding the gasses inside the tire, and forcing the tire onto the rim, there by 'seating' the tire on the rim.
- Check to see if tire bead is successfully mounted on both sides of the rim. Repeat procedure if necessary. When tire is seated, install valve core and inflate tire to recommended tire pressure.
Tips
- This is the old school way of doing things and is a little scary. It is a cool trick, though.
Warnings
- This should only be done in case of an emergency and is a very dangerous procedure. Read the article a few times, it is deceptively simple, and full of danger at the same time.
Things You'll Need
- A tire mounted on a rim
- A can of ether
- A cigarette lighter
- A valve stem tool to remove the Schrader valve inside the valve stem
- A fire extinguisher, or baking soda, as there will be a small 'fire' for a few seconds.
