Steps

  1. Before you start negotiating with your supervisor for time off plan a suitable time and place. Also take into consideration the 'mood' of your supervisor. It is advised not to negotiate on these thing in the first half of the day. The best time to do this negotiation would be when your supervisor is just back from a break.
  2. Explain the genuineness of your purpose. When you speak to your supervisor, sincerely explain to him the purpose why you must take time off.
  3. Assure your supervisor that you will compensate for this time off. It is a must to clearly tell your supervisor how you are going to compensate for this time off. It would be best if you could plan additional time for a project or assignment which is most important for your supervisor.
  4. Listen to his concerns. Once you have put your words to your supervisor, listen patiently for his concerns and feedback.
  5. Try to address each of the concerns raised through a clear plan of action and give sincere assurance that you will make sure all the concerns are addressed.
  6. Revise/Accommodate. If you are asked to make minor changes in your plan do accommodate these changes to create a win-win situation for all.
