Open a Domino's Pizza Franchise in the U.S.

There are three ways to open a Domino's Pizza Franchise in the United States. All but about 10 percent of Domino's Pizza franchises are opened by employees that first became a general manager of a Domino's location. Two other options are to join the franchisee training program or have the financial resources to open at least five locations as a multi-unit owner. Franchisee trainees must have the goal of becoming a multi-unit owner and meet certain requirements. Dominos currently has more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. Before you can become a franchisee, you need to understand the different ways you can achieve this.

Steps

Becoming a General Manager at Domino’s Pizza

  1. Apply for a job at a Domino’s Pizza store in your area. You will need to go into the store you are interested in, and ask for a job application. Fill it out neatly and thoroughly.
    • If you are asked in for an interview, make sure that you are well prepared!
    • If you already have experience in the restaurant business or other management experience, consider applying for a management position straight away. If you don’t have much experience, then apply for a different position, such as delivery driver.
  2. Work your way up the chain. If you are able to obtain a job at Domino’s Pizza, perhaps as a delivery driver or customer service representative.[1], then do your best to work your way up the chain to eventually become a general manager.
    • Be patient! This may take some time to accomplish, but if you work hard you will get there.
    • Make sure you show up on time to work, are always dressed properly with good hygiene, and that you are always friendly and sincere with fellow employees and customers. This will impress your boss and help you move more quickly.
    • Be willing to relocate! Moving up the chain may go faster if you are willing to work in other stores. For example, if the general manager in your store seems as though he/she is planning to stay put for the foreseeable future, then it is unlikely that you will be able to become general manager at this location.
  3. Work in a Domino’s Pizza as a general manager for at least a year. In order to be eligible to become a franchisee, you must work in this position for at least a year. During this time, learn all that you can about how to run the business efficiently. It will be good to have this experience once you become a franchisee.
  4. Acquire at least $50,000 in liquid capital to invest in the Domino's franchise. Liquid capital refers to money that you are able to access easily. For example, money you have stored in checking accounts, savings accounts, and mutual funds.[2]
    • Although you will need $50,000 to be able to get your franchise up and running, it is wise to have significantly more money available as unexpected costs are likely to arise.
  5. Apply to become a Domino's franchisee. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have a good credit history in order to be considered for franchise ownership.

Entering the Domino’s Pizza Franchisee Training Program

  1. Meet the requirements of the Domino's Pizza franchisee training program. This is not an easy program to get into, so be aware of the requirements for acceptance before beginning.
    • You must be a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree and minimum GPA of 3.0 out 4.0.
    • You cannot have more than five years of professional work experience after graduation.
    • You must have a proven track record as a leader and as a person who is able to work independently, meet goals, solve problems, and make decisions.
  2. Participate in the two to three year training program. During this time, you will receive special training on operations through working as an assistant manager and as a general manager for six to nine months. You will also receive training in marketing and human resources through working in corporate operations.
    • In order to apply for the program, you will have to send an email to: Franchising.Opportunities@dominos.com. Provide the following information in your email:
      • First and last Name, street address, city, state, zip, telephone number (preferably one where you can easily be reached, such as your cell phone), email address, and your area of interest.
    • If an opportunity becomes available, you will be contacted.[3]
    • During this program you will be paid at least $40,000 per year. If you are still working to have enough money to run your franchise, do your best to save as much as possible to put towards your new restaurant.
  3. Receive $25,000 in investment funds. Upon successful completion of the training program, you have earned $25,000 to put towards opening your first store.
    • Do not squander this money! There may be legal consequences if it is not used for it’s intended purpose, which is to open a Domino’s Pizza franchise.
  4. Plan the grand opening of your first Domino’s Pizza store. This will likely be a very challenging and busy time, but it also comes with great rewards! Keep working hard to make your store a success.
    • Make sure to advertise your store as much as possible! Put ads in the paper, have a grand opening party, place advertisements on your car. People won’t come if they don’t know your store exists.

Becoming a Domino’s Pizza Multi-Unit Owner

  1. Identify which state you would like to buy existing Domino's Pizza stores or build new stores. You can look online at Dominosbiz.com to see which states are open to multi-unit investors.
  2. Send an email to Domino's Pizza. In order to be considered for multi-unit ownership, you must contact the company via email at:Franchising.Opportunities@dominos.com. Provide the following information in your email:

  3. Qualify for ownership of multiple units. You must have previous experience operating a restaurant or retail business and meet the financial requirements.
    • Information about financial requirements for this method is not openly shared, and may also vary by state. If you are interested in this method, go into your local Domino's Pizza to inquire or contact corporate headquarters via phone at: 001(734) 930-3030 or emailing them at: Franchising.Opportunities@dominos.com.
  4. Receive training prior to your grand opening. Before you open your first store, you will receive training regarding the Domino’s Pizza mission, values, and goals.

Tips

  • Domino's Pizza offers master franchising and sub-franchising opportunities outside the U.S. Master franchising involves opening stores in an international market that doesn't currently have Domino's Pizza stores. It requires knowledge of the target market in the specific country and millions of dollars to develop stores and a distributions system. Sub-franchising is at the discretion of the master franchiser in a given international market.

Warnings

  • Expect to be relocated several times during the Domino's Pizza franchisee training program.
