Organize Your Day Planner for School

Have a new day planner but don't know exactly how to maintain and organize it? Well, you came to the right page.

Steps

  1. Name your planner. This may sound odd, but when you name an object, you give it more presence in your life.
  2. Write out sections for every subject/course you take. Put the homework for each subject/course under its corresponding section. Use bullets and create an extra section, if possible, for reminders and events.
  3. Make your planner a part of your daily routine. With this, it will become a habit to check your planner daily without forgetting about it the next week.
  4. Fill in your assignments' due dates as soon as you get them. Write down the corresponding textbook pages and things the professor/teacher tells you to include.
  5. Learn to use the backward planning. Try to review your plans two or three days before to remind yourself of the event.
  6. Use the color coding system. It will keep your planner and you more organized. For example, try highlighting things that are due this week in yellow.
  7. Put everything in your planner. That includes homework, tests, parties, shopping, conferences, etc.
  8. Use colorful sticky-note flags to mark your events. Buy and hole-punch Zip-Lock plastic bags or just the pouches inside the planner and fill them with index tags, big stickies, small stickies...anything is possible!
  9. Don't discard old pages. You never know if it will come in handy. Store them in a box if you have to. If it's not too expensive, you can also buy another planner, label it, and keep the old pages in there for future reference.
  10. Go ahead and congratulate yourself ahead of time.
  11. If possible, buy a planner at an office store or get one from your school or office. These have pre-printed calendars and spaces to write information.

Tips

  • It's really nice to use the color coding system as mentioned above, but you don't need to.
  • While writing down projects, it helps to put a small bracket around anything that is due in the next few days.
  • When writing down due projects, readings or homework, you could either write the earliest deadlines first or the heaviest workload first.
  • It may be helpful to put your timetable on your locker door.
