Pass the Oklahoma Driving Test

During the Oklahoma driving test, an employee of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS) observes your ability to control your vehicle and obey the rules of the road. If you don't pass the Oklahoma driving test the first time, you can try again as soon as the next day. Teenagers must take a driver's education course and obtain a learner permit before they can try to pass the Oklahoma driving test at age 16. Adult drivers can take the test at any time.

Steps

Requirements Under Age 17

  1. Participate in a driver's education course.
    • You can take a class taught by an instructor certified by the Oklahoma DPS as young as age 15.
    • You must wait until you are at least 15.5 years old to begin parent-taught driver's education. The course must be purchased from a parent-taught driver education provider approved by the Oklahoma DPS.
    • Either course must include 30 hours of classroom training and 55 hours of driving. At least 10 of the behind-the-wheel hours must be during nighttime.
  2. Wait until you are at least 15.5 years old to apply for a learner permit. With a learner permit, you must have someone who is at least 21 years old in the front seat with you when you are driving.
  3. Go to your local Oklahoma DPS office with the necessary documents to obtain a learner permit. Wear your glasses or contacts.
  4. Take the vision test. If you require glasses or contacts to pass the test, you must wear these vision corrective devices while driving.
  5. Pass the written test. You should know the information in the Oklahoma Driver's Manual before taking the test. If you don't pass the test, you'll have to wait at least 1 day to retake it. You'll be assessed another $4 fee (all fees are paid upon successfully passing the test and receiving the learner permit) for each retake.
  6. Pay the necessary fees to receive your learner permit. As of 2011, the license fee is $21.50 plus $4 for the application and $4 for each written test retake.
  7. Become eligible to take the Oklahoma driving test any time after you turn 16, possess a learner permit for at least 6 months and complete the driving log with the required 55 hours of driving practice.

Requirements Over Age 17

  1. Go to your local Oklahoma DPS office to take the Oklahoma driving test. The vehicle you will be driving in must have a valid tag and be in good mechanical condition.
  2. Demonstrate you can control and maneuver your vehicle during the test. The examiner will be evaluating the following skills:
    • Steering the vehicle and keeping it in the correct lane at all times.
    • Performing basic maneuvers, such as turning left and right, backing up and parking in different situations.
    • Using your turn signals appropriately and following right-of-way rules.
    • An awareness of other drivers and pedestrians and appropriately responding to potential hazards.
    • Knowing and adhering to traffic signs, signals and markings on the road.
  3. Return to take the test again if you don't pass the Oklahoma driving test the first time. You'll need to wait at least 1 day to retake the test. If you fail 3 times, you'll need to wait 30 days to retake it.
  4. Pay the necessary fees after you pass the Oklahoma driving test. As of 2011, the license fee is $21.50 plus $4 for the application and $4 for each driving test retake.

Tips

  • The person evaluating your driving will not try to trick you by asking you to do something illegal.
  • At age 15, you can begin behind-the-wheel with a certified instructor even before you have a learner permit.
  • Don't ever let somebody without a license drive your car.

Warnings

  • The Oklahoma driving test won't be administered if roads are too slippery.
  • Do not text and drive! It is very dangerous.
  • Drive Safely!
