Place the Ball You Hit in Baseball
Placing the ball when you hit can mean the difference in a game. This can help to give you more hits since you can hit the ball where there are no fielders.
Steps
- If you are just starting out, you don't want to try to place the ball, the most important thing is to make good contact, and the hits will come.
- Learn how to adjust your swing, not by changing the actual speed of your swing, but the starting moment of your swing.
- If you are trying to hit a ball to the opposite field, do not change anything about your swing. Start your swing with a slightly later trigger to keep the bat head from crossing all of the way through the strike zone. Close off your hips by placing the foot closest to the pitcher a few inches closer to the plate. This will allow you to make contact with the pitch later in the zone and drive it to the opposite field.
- To pull the ball, start your swing slightly sooner with your trigger than you would normally, allowing the bat head to get through the strike zone quickly and out in front of the ball. Open up your hips by taking the foot closest to the pitcher and moving it farther away from home plate.
Tips
- Always pay attention.
- Make sure you don't get nervous. "If you get nervous...you will not succeed."
- Make solid contact with the ball and consistently drive it up the middle of the field. This means you timed the pitch perfectly with your swing.
- Watch your feet! If you open or close your stance, depending on where you want to hit the ball, a catcher will pick up on it and purposely pitch away from that area. Sometimes, it's easier to have your feet even from the plate and adjust to where the pitch is accordingly.
