Prepare for a Mystery Shop

Preparing for a mystery shop is a crucial part of being a successful shopper. This goes for new and veteran shoppers! Even the best and most experienced shoppers should always review the instructions prior to the shop date, as clients may modify the requirements.

Steps

  1. Be sure to review and print your instructions before your assignment date to ensure you know what you will be evaluating. This is important even if you have previously done the shop because the client may have changed the evaluation criteria. Some mystery shops provide or ask you to prepare a scenario or story you can use during your mystery shop; make sure to plan ahead so you will sound natural and believable while presenting the scenario to the employee!
  2. Highlight key information that you will need to gather before, during, and after your shop. If you have questions after reading your shop instructions, make sure to contact your shop scheduler ASAP. Give your scheduler enough time to respond to your questions, so they are sure to get back to you in a timely manner.
  3. Set enough time in your day to perform the shop. If for some reason you cannot perform the shop based on outstanding circumstances be sure to call your scheduler right away! Remember, if you need to re-schedule your shop assignment, you must get in touch with your scheduler to confirm the new date is approved. If you need to cancel a shop do so immediately to ensure the scheduler has enough time to re-assign the shop. But keep in mind it may affect your standing so only cancel a shop if you are 100% sure you will not be able to complete it.
  4. Call to verify client hours of operation. Business hours vary from location to location, so always call in advance to ensure you will be going to perform your shop during the store's open hours. Also, always check the holiday hour schedules.
  5. Verify shop location and address: Many establishments have multiple locations within the same city, so be certain to verify you are planning on visiting the correct location. Performing your shop at the wrong address will most likely void your shop.
  6. Be sure to have fun! The first time you perform a shop it may seem a bit confusing, but once you have completed a few shops it will become a breeze and you will be want to take on more assignments!
