Prepare to Become a Consultant

If you're desirous of starting a career in management consulting, whatever your industry background, here are some important things to consider.

There's nothing far-fetched about wanting to enter an industry you don't have the exact background for. But to successfully get into a consulting track, you should start by understanding the essence of what the consulting profession is all about. This will help you develop and convey the attributes you need to market yourself well for that industry.

Steps

  1. Have credibility. This is critical to consultants. In your profession as a consultant, you need to be consistently convincing and credible at all times. You will repeatedly enter client situations where you initially may know little about the project or assignment you are performing. As a consultant, you must provide the client a working solution to their problem and, at the same time, retain the client's interest and support.
  2. Be able to solve through analysis. It's not that consultants must walk into a situation with all the answers up front but what you must have is the ability and training to successfully analyze and solve problems, so that you are unquestionably able to consistently deliver these skills and get results. This, after all, is the reason why clients pay high fees for your services.
  3. Be a good communicator. You should have strong interpersonal and presentation skills. You should always be well prepared with facts, not fluff, and be able to anticipate and quickly resolve situations which may arise. Regardless of what you know, delivery and presentation of the problems or solutions is critical in working with your clients. If you can't clearly convey your findings and deliver on realistic solutions to your client, your clients won't want to deal with you for very long.
    • While you may be thinking: "Actually I am a confident person," or "All the people I deal with have total trust in me." In fact, no doubt that's true. However, as a consultant, you must convey that confidence and credibility immediately and undoubtedly within every situation you deal with. Even during the consulting job interview, you will be challenged to display such characteristics.
  4. Do your background research. Your success in entering the consulting field will greatly improve if you have a good understanding of what a consultant does, and the types of skills and abilities required to do those things well. You can then work towards developing yourself and, subsequently, presenting yourself in the ways needed. Otherwise, you may be hard pressed to even make it past the first interview.
