Private Message Someone in IRC
So you want to ask someone something in IRC but you don't want everyone to see it?
Contents
Steps
- Make sure you're identified.
- Click in the chat bar and type: /msg (whoever) (message).
- For example, if you wanted to private message, say, a user named "wikiHowian", you'd type this: /msg wikiHowian Hi. Then the person you messaged would have a message saying "Hi." on it.
- After you've typed that, the name you just messaged will appear. Wait for it to change colors.
- Click on it when it does change colors. That will mean the other person messaged you back.
- Read and start conversation.
Tips
- If you have any typos it won't work, you'll just end up messaging no one.
- You don't have to put /msg whoever every single time. Just click on the name and start typing.
- Be sure to return to the channel afterwards by clicking on it.
- If the other person messaged you first, it's basically opposite. Their name will appear at the top, and you have to click on it and type to them.
- If you mess up typing the other person's user name, the message thing will usually say "***ChanServ: No such Nick/channel". However this is only true if ChanServ is on guard in the channel you're in (in wikiHow IRC this will always happen).
- If you don't want to do /msg, you can also type /query or /privmsg.
Warnings
- If you use this feature to harass or have cyber sex and the like, in most channels, you will be caught and banned.
