Recondition a Rechargeable Battery

Is your cell phone or laptop battery holding less of a charge because you plug it in often before the full power has run out? Many devices have a microprocessor which can cause this problem, rather than the battery itself. Here's a simple solution that might resolve this problem.

Steps

  1. Allow your device to completely run out of battery power and shut itself down.
  2. Wait 10-15 minutes (do not charge!).
  3. Turn the device on again and allow it to shut itself down one more time (this should take 0-10 minutes). After this is done, your device will be fully discharged.
  4. Charge your device back to full power. Allow the device to charge at least an additional 30 minutes after it has indicated it is fully charged.
  5. Repeat this process three times (which may take a few days, depending on the device).

Tips

  • Time this for charging overnight, so you don't need to disrupt the process by leaving the house with your device.
  • After you've completed this process, try to regularly let your device completely run out of batteries before charging it. Otherwise, this process may need to be repeated every 2-4 months.

Warnings

  • This will only help if the problem with the battery is frequent charging. If the battery still does not hold a charge, the problem is probably the battery itself.
