Reduce Noise from Straps on a Car Roof

Carrying items on your car roof with tie down straps, surf straps, or a roof rack can create a large amount of noise when you drive at high speeds.  You can reduce noise from straps by configuring them optimally.

Steps

  1. Place the item on the car and position the straps to guarantee the item doesn't slip.
  2. Twist each strap before you tighten the straps.  This is the trick that reduces the noise.  Tight straps without a twist are far more likely to vibrate and make loud noises at high speeds.  By twisting the straps, you will reduce the sounds.
  3. Check for safety and tension and drive.
