Remove Yellowing from White Appliances

Through exposure to light, food chemicals and other items in the house, some white appliances can take on a slightly yellowed look. While this doesn't impact the performance of the appliance, it can make its appearance less desirable. This article suggests a method for removing the yellowing.

Steps

  1. Assemble the items needed. These are listed below under "Things You'll Need". Put on your gloves to protect your skin from the drying harshness of the bleach.
  2. Mix together the bleach, baking soda and warm water.
  3. Dip a sponge into the mixture. Wipe the mixture over the yellowed areas of the appliance with the sponge.
  4. Leave the mixture on the yellowed area for 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse off after 10 minutes and allow to dry completely before reusing.

Tips

  • Repeat the process if any of the yellowing does not come off with the first application.
  • Be aware that sun or heat damaged plastic may be so badly discolored and brittle that it cannot be restored by this method.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup bleach
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 4 cups warm water
  • Bowl for mixing
  • Mixing implement
  • Sponge
  • Gloves
