Remove a Car Tire

This explains how to remove a car tire from a rim and how to reinstall a car tire on a rim without using a tire machine.

Steps

  1. Weld a vertical 12" length of 1/2" threaded rod to a metal shop table
  2. Place tire and rim assembly centered over the rod.
  3. Fab a 1/2"x1" piece of bar stock with a 1/2" hole
  4. Place it over the rod and bolt it down to hold the rim securely.
  5. Fab a chisel like tool but fairly blunt about 2" wide x 1/2".
  6. Using a sledgehammer and chisel, break the bead. Flip and repeat.
  7. Get a long pry bar under the bead, rest against the rod.
  8. Run it around the tire and pull the bead off the rim.
  9. Repeat for second bead.
  10. Reverse procedure to reinstall tire.
  11. To re-seat bead you will need an air tank with large nozzle. The nozzle is 1/2" x 4" and fed by a 1" pipe and valve. The blast of air is aimed between the tire and rim and will inflate the tire just long enough to barely set the beads and allow full pressurization.

Tips

  • Using manual tire bars on an aluminum rim can damage the rim if the person doing it is not careful. Unless it's a salvage rim, it's cheaper to take it to a tire shop than it is to replace a rim. Use caution when working with a soft metal rim. They are less forgiving than steel rims.

Warnings

  • Wear eye protection when using sledgehammer.
  • Use caution when arc welding

Things You'll Need

  • Steel welding table
  • Welder
  • Threaded rod, 1x1/2 flat,
