Replace a Vehicle's O2 sensor

Is your check engine light on? Have you been to an auto-parts store to get a diagnostic run on your car? Did they tell you there is something wrong with the emissions? Most of the time it is your O2 sensor, and this is how to change it.

Steps

Screw in type

Removing the O2 sensor

  1. Locate the original sensor which is before the catalytic converter (The square or oval box between the engine and the muffler).
  2. Spray penetrating oil on the old sensor. Let it sit for a minute.
  3. Remove the sensor with the sensor socket.

Installing the New O2 Sensor

  1. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the sensor.
  2. Screw sensor into exhaust by hand.
  3. Use a torque wrench to tighten sensor to the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Unplug the battery wait 30 min. and replug to reset check engine light.

Mount on type

Removing the O2 sensor

  1. Locate the original sensor which is before the catalytic converter (The square or oval box between the engine and the muffler).
  2. Spray penetrating oil on mounting bracket.
  3. Remove sensor by removing the four stainless steel nuts from the bracket.

Installing the New O2 Sensor

  1. Apply anti-seize compound to the four stainless steel nuts.
  2. Insert new sensor, and screw the four prepared nuts onto the mounting bracket.
  3. Unplug the battery wait 30 min. and replug to reset check engine light.

Tips

  • New stainless steel nut should be used to attach new O2 sensor to the bracket of the mount on type.
  • If the sensor won't unscrew try letting the vehicle run just long enough for the exhaust pipe to heat up, but not so hot to burn you. Spray penetrating oil on the sensor cooling it, and the quick change in temperature will help the sensor break free.
  • After you replug the battery if light comes on again it might be the converter itself.

Warnings

  • When using anti-seize compound apply to the threads only.Do not get the compound on the sensor itself.
