Replace the Head Unit and Speakers in a 1996 2000 Honda Civic Sedan

1996-2000 Civics are great, but the stereos aren't. Most of these vehicles came factory OEM equipped with an A/M-F/M stereo and 4 speakers. Today we'll show you how to replace both the stereo in the dashboard (head unit) and the 4 speakers.

Steps

  1. Disconnect the battery terminals from the battery.

Replace the Head Unit

  1. Pry the bezel around the head unit.
  2. Unscrew the 4 Philips-head screws holding the head unit in place.
  3. Disconnect the wiring and remove the head unit from the dashboard. Set it aside. Set the screws aside for later.
  4. Connect the wiring to the new head unit.
  5. Place the new head unit into the dashboard and secure it with the 4 Philips-head screws you removed earlier. Knock the bezel around it back into place.

Replace Front Door Speakers

  1. Pry the speaker grille off and set it aside for later.
  2. Unscrew the 4 Philips-head screws holding the speaker into place.
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness from the speaker and remove the speaker and set it aside.
  4. Connect the wiring harness to the new speaker and place it into the hole in the front door panel.
  5. Secure the front door speaker to the front door panel with the 4 Philips-head screws you removed earlier.
  6. Place the speaker grille back onto the front door panel and knock it into place.
  7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 to replace the other front door speaker.

Replace the Rear Deck Speakers

  1. Open the rear trunk with the master key.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from each rear deck speaker.
  3. Unscrew the 8 screws holding each rear deck speaker in place. Set them aside for later.
  4. Remove both rear deck speakers and set them aside.
  5. Secure the new rear deck speakers into place with the 8 Philips-head screws you removed earlier.
  6. Connect the wiring harnesses to the new rear deck speakers.
  7. Re-connect the battery terminals to the battery and test your new stereo system out!
  8. Finished.

Tips

  • Please note that this is only to replace the factory OEM components, not add a DVD player, rear headrest screens, tweeters, sub-woofers, etc.
  • If you cannot do this, take your Civic to your nearest Best Buy or stereo store for assistance.
