Replace the Head Unit and Speakers in a 1996 2000 Honda Civic Sedan
1996-2000 Civics are great, but the stereos aren't. Most of these vehicles came factory OEM equipped with an A/M-F/M stereo and 4 speakers. Today we'll show you how to replace both the stereo in the dashboard (head unit) and the 4 speakers.

Steps
- Disconnect the battery terminals from the battery.
Replace the Head Unit
- Pry the bezel around the head unit.
- Unscrew the 4 Philips-head screws holding the head unit in place.
- Disconnect the wiring and remove the head unit from the dashboard. Set it aside. Set the screws aside for later.
- Connect the wiring to the new head unit.
- Place the new head unit into the dashboard and secure it with the 4 Philips-head screws you removed earlier. Knock the bezel around it back into place.
Replace Front Door Speakers
- Pry the speaker grille off and set it aside for later.
- Unscrew the 4 Philips-head screws holding the speaker into place.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from the speaker and remove the speaker and set it aside.
- Connect the wiring harness to the new speaker and place it into the hole in the front door panel.
- Secure the front door speaker to the front door panel with the 4 Philips-head screws you removed earlier.
- Place the speaker grille back onto the front door panel and knock it into place.
- Repeat steps 1 through 6 to replace the other front door speaker.
Replace the Rear Deck Speakers
- Open the rear trunk with the master key.
- Disconnect the wiring harness from each rear deck speaker.
- Unscrew the 8 screws holding each rear deck speaker in place. Set them aside for later.
- Remove both rear deck speakers and set them aside.
- Secure the new rear deck speakers into place with the 8 Philips-head screws you removed earlier.
- Connect the wiring harnesses to the new rear deck speakers.
- Re-connect the battery terminals to the battery and test your new stereo system out!
- Finished.
Tips
- Please note that this is only to replace the factory OEM components, not add a DVD player, rear headrest screens, tweeters, sub-woofers, etc.
- If you cannot do this, take your Civic to your nearest Best Buy or stereo store for assistance.
