Reset Your Zune

Microsoft seems to be a popular subject for jokes about crashing, freezing, and unstable software. It seems only inevitable that your new Zune will also lock up. Wouldn't it be nice to know how to reset it just in case?

Steps

  1. Charge your Zune for at least 30 minutes before proceeding, to ensure that you have enough battery.
  2. Before you try resetting your Zune, check the Hold Switch. Even if the switch is off, it can sometimes still be on. Flick the Hold Switch on and off.
  3. Plug your Zune into your computer and sync it. The sync process will sometimes unfreeze your Zune.
  4. If that didn't fix it, your Zune may truly be frozen. Hold the "Back" and "Up" buttons together until the screen turns black (two to five seconds).
  5. Look for the Zune logo and a white progress bar near the bottom of the screen. Your Zune should be back to normal in about five seconds.

Tips

  • The two-button combination to reset your Zune will work even if you have the hold switch on.
  • If you are still having trouble, click "Install Games" in the Zune software even if the games are already installed. It will reinstall them anyway and reboot when finished.

Warnings

  • Resetting your Zune may erase recent settings such as new radio presets, recent changes to the background picture, or recent changes to your settings. This is unlikely, but possible.
