Update Sony Blu Ray Player

Sony Blu Ray players are designed to be updated frequently with the newest programming, called "firmware." Although the updates used to be done with a disc, they can now be performed over the Internet. Learn more about how to update a Sony Blu Ray player.

Steps

Set Up

  1. Connect your Sony Blu Ray player to the Internet.
    • Depending upon your system, your Internet access could be connected through an Ethernet cable or wireless technology.
  2. Test the connection before attempting to update the Sony firmware.

Power Connection

  1. Turn on your television.
  2. Set the TV input to the Blu Ray player. Many TVs have several inputs, such as cable, DVD player, streaming device (like Roku or Apple TV) and gaming consoles.
  3. Turn on the Blu Ray player.

Blu Ray Settings

  1. Grab the Blu Ray remote. Press the "Home" button.
    • Many Sony systems have an interface called a "Xross Media Bar (XMB), which scrolls both horizontally and vertically through menus using arrows on your remote.
  2. Scroll horizontally through the Blu Ray screen until you come to the "Set up" option. It may be an icon in the form of a toolbox.
  3. Scroll vertically to find set up options. Look for the "Network Update" icon. It is a picture of arrows forming a circle.
  4. Press the center, or "enter" button.

Blu Ray Network Update

  1. Wait for the system to check for new network updates. It should show you what your current system version is and what the newest update is.
  2. Select the yellow "Ok" button by using the left arrow.
  3. Wait for the network to download the firmware onto your Sony Blu Ray player.
  4. Return to the home screen to use your Blu-ray player. You may want to turn it off and on again to make sure the settings are in place.

Blu Ray Update Notifications

  1. Scroll horizontally to the set up icon. Press enter.
  2. Scroll vertically until you find "System Settings." Press enter.
  3. Look through the options until you find "Software Update Notification." Press enter.
  4. Scroll upward to choose "On." Press enter.
    • Turning this function on will simply alert you every time there is a new update available. You will use the same process to update the new Blu Ray firmware.
