Reset a Car's Automatic Window After Replacing the Battery
Hooray! You've successfully replaced your car's battery but now your automatic window function does not work. If the power windows roll up and down, but the automatic function does not activate, there is a quick trick to resetting the window. Try it before taking your car to the repair shop unnecessarily.
Steps
- Put key in ignition. You can start the car or just turn the key far enough to engage the power windows.
- Ensure windows are fully closed.
- Roll down the window and hold for five seconds. Depress the driver's side automatic window button, letting it roll down all the way. Once it reaches the bottom, continue holding the button for five more seconds.
- Immediately roll up the window and hold for five seconds. Lift the window button, letting it roll up all the way. Once it reaches the top, continue holding the button for five full seconds.
- Release the window button.
- Test the automatic window function. The automatic window function should have reset. If it has not, repeat the process, ensuring that the windows have been rolled up and down using the correct pause intervals.
Tips
- The hold times vary among manufacturers, but the basic instructions remain the same. You can check with your car manufacturer to be sure.
- If the window function stopped working for a reason aside from changing the battery, then you may need to take the car to your mechanic.
- Some car models may require that you reset each window individually.
