Reset a Samsung Galaxy S3

Resetting your Samsung Galaxy S3 can be helpful in the event your device is experiencing problems or you just want to restore your phone back to its default factory settings. Performing a reset will also wipe all your personal data and settings. Follow one of the three methods below to reset your Samsung Galaxy S3.

Steps

Reset from the Settings Menu

  1. Tap “Menu” from the home screen.
  2. Tap on “Settings.
  3. Select “Back up and reset.
    • By default, your device will automatically backup and restore all your data. If you do not want your personal data backed up and restored following the reset, tap on each corresponding option to clear the check box.
  4. Tap on “Factory data reset.
  5. Tap on “Reset device.
    • If you have the screen lock feature enabled on your device, you will be prompted to enter your password or PIN code before you can continue.
  6. Select “Delete all. Your phone will then reset by wiping all data and rebooting[1].

Reset when Powered Off

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S3.
  2. Press and hold down the “Power” button, “Home” button, and the “Volume Up” button.
  3. Wait for your phone to vibrate, then release only the “Power” button.
  4. Wait for the Android System Recovery screen to appear, then release the “Home” and “Volume Up” keys.
  5. Press the “Volume Down” button until the “Wipe data / factory reset” option is highlighted.
  6. Press the “Power” key to select the option.
  7. Press the “Volume Down” button until “Delete all user data” is highlighted.
  8. Press the “Power” button once again to select the option. Your phone will then perform the reset process and display “Reboot system now” when complete.
  9. Press the “Power” key to select the reboot option and complete the master reset.

Tips

  • Verify that any personal data you want saved such as images, videos, and contacts are backed up to your phone’s micro SD card or to the Google server before you reset your device. Resetting your device will wipe all your personal internal storage.
