Restore a Blackened Cookie Sheet

Over years of use, cookie sheets can become blackened by carbonized residues. The black coating absorbs heat and helps to cook the bottom of your food at a faster rate. If you like most things you bake to be browned on the bottom, you may not need to restore the cookie sheet. However, if you find that food is being browned beyond your taste (or burned), these steps will help.

Steps

  1. Purchase a can of spray-on oven cleaner from any retailer.

  2. Locate and wear heavy-duty rubber gloves.

  3. Carefully spray oven cleaner over the entire cookie sheet. Do not allow oven cleaner to contact your skin in any way.

  4. Allow the sheet to sit for 15-30 minutes.

  5. Wearing rubber gloves, use an old towel or a rag to wipe off all of the oven cleaner. Throw the towel or rag away after use.

  6. Wash the cookie sheet very thoroughly with soap and water. Make sure that no oven cleaner residue remains.

  7. Bake as usual, with a much shinier (and more reflective) cookie sheet.

Tips

  • Also you may need to place the cookie sheet in warm oven to activate the oven cleaner.
  • If possible, do this outdoors in order to avoid dealing with oven cleaner residue in the indoor air and on household surfaces.

Warnings

  • Oven cleaner is highly caustic. Do not get it on your skin. If it gets into your eyes, seek medical attention immediately.
