Sell Gum at School

Need some extra cash? Selling things can be a great way to earn money. School is a great place to sell things, and if you need some ideas, why not try gum? Gum is cheap to buy and fun to sell, with all different brands and flavors. Selling gum at school can not only be profitable, it can also be like an exercise that will prepare you for a wealthy opportunity.

Steps

  1. Buy your stock. Visit your local supermarket and get some 10 packs of Wrigley's gum, each pack containing 5 sticks. You may have to visit many stores to see them all. Note that some of them say "EXTRA", but are still made by Wrigley's. The only popular flavors that come in that size are:
    • Winterfresh
    • Watermelon
    • Big Red/Cinnamon
    • DoubleMint
    • Classic Bubble
    • Juicy Fruit
    • Be sure to sell sugar free gum as well.
  2. Experiment with other, less known flavors. Some examples include:
    • Polar Ice
    • Wild berry Frost
    • Peppermint
    • Spearmint
    • Citrus mint
  3. Set your prices. Calculate what would be a profitable but not sky high price to sell it at. 25 cents a pack is good. You still might be able to sell a pack for 50, but people might think it’s a rip-off and repeat customers are less likely- slow and steady wins the race. Don't sell your gum at prices like 13 cents, make it multiples of 5.
  4. Start selling your gum. Go to school the next day completely prepared. Bring lots or quarters and other coins in case the first customer pays with a dollar and only wants one pack.
    • No special "exceptions". If you choose to sell your gum at a quarter a pack, that's a quarter for everybody, not 25 cents for your classmates and a dime for your best friend. Be fair.
  5. Experiment with foreign types of gum As you know, different countries have different popular brands. For example, Asia has some really long lasting gum that is unique to them. Bring it to another area, and people will be willing to pay a lot more for it.
  6. Get Protection. People may try to steal your profit or your stock, so you should always remember to store and keep your money in discreet, safe, and secretive places and put your stock in a place that you can check all the time.

Tips

  • A 25 cent pack of gum suddenly becomes worth a million dollars when people are listening to that boring lecture in class.
  • Be nice and respectful to any potential customers
  • Sure, it's not the best idea to sell individual pieces of gum, but if you want to offer Good Gum, like '5', which comes in packs of 15, you can try selling them 1 piece for about a quarter, and bring out the pack and show them it's safe!
  • Don't bring large dollar bills to school. You may think that's a clever idea so that you can sell to people who only have 20s, but it can get lost or stolen.
  • After you get caught the first time, you can still continue selling but exercise more caution. Keep everything in a Have a Secret Locker at School. Go around asking people for gum to buy. If they say yes, disappear and go without them to get out whatever they wanted to buy. Bring it to them. Do not let them see you there or they could use that information to snitch or blackmail you later.
  • Never listen to people who say they will pay you back the next day, or give out "samples"; people will take you less seriously and try to take advantage if they find out.
  • Keep a record of your overall profit.
  • Most of your profit will be in quarters. Roll them up using quarter rolls and take them to the bank. You can deposit them in your account, (If you don't have a bank account, now would be a good time to open one.) or cash 'em up. Avoid using "Coinstar" type machines. They may be easier to use, but they will take some of your profit as a transaction fee.
  • Do tons of things but don't bribe people.
  • You may eventually become well-known and approached by customers rather than you approaching them. This is a good thing.
  • If your parents have membership at Costco or Sam's Club or another warehouse style store buy the gum there as it’s cheaper than a lot of other stores. (This can be tricky if your parents don't approve but most prefer you selling gum than taking money from them).
  • You could also team up with a buddy and split the profit, you would get more popularity selling your product if you are two instead of being solo. Technically, you're not losing profit because gum is a renewable source (you can sell more than once to the same person).
  • Never eat your profit, no matter how much you crave a stick of gum. You can bunch a few packs together and take a good whiff, but that’s it.
  • Wear cargos or even BDU pants, because of the many pockets they have. Put different varieties of gum and your money in separate pockets.
  • know your regular customers, these people will most likely be coming to you for your products (not drugs in case you were thinking of that) and most likely won't be able to get gum anywhere else. Take advantage of these people and approach them on a daily basis.
  • Don't get caught. That's the most important thing as you will most likely be put on a warning system and have a close eye on you so you'll have to be extra careful. Remember if you go over the top and get caught then you'll be off the plank and into the ice cold waters of detention
  • Put your gum packs in a bag or wear a dress over pants that have pockets so you won't get caught.
  • Try to carry change but don't carry large amounts of it. Your profit or money that you are using for change can get stolen and you don't want that to happen.
  • Be aware of snitches. They'll give you away to the teachers, who will take your goods, or worse, make you refund the cash.

Warnings

  • Do not get caught. In class, walk around desk-to-desk with gum in your pockets offering some gum. Be wary of snitches, they usually come in the form of a nice do-gooder boy, so be careful. If people then ask what flavors you have, they will most likely be customers
  • Don’t sell individually wrapped sticks. Those are not sealed, and you have no way of proving to people that you didn’t do anything to the gum.
  • Make sure there is no policy as "no gum selling in school" in place.
  • Also have other people to work with you.
