Make Money Selling Sweets

This article goes over the basics of selling sweets in school (or potentially outside of school) and making a profit to expand the business.

Steps

  1. Decide how much money you would like to invest. After you have done this look at different options on sweets. Let's say you have 5 dollars and you want to make 10 dollars, what do you do? You could buy 50 10-cent sweets and sell them for twenty cents, or 100 5-cent candies and sell them for 10 cents, etc. It is your choice. If you don't think that you can sell a high volume, go for sweets with greater profit and sell fewer.
  2. Selling merchandise to people can be the hardest part. Depending on the person they might want more sweets than someone else. Choose wisely, try not to sell to someone who will scam you.
  3. Once you have established with some people that you are selling sweets, they might come back asking for some more.
  4. Ask how much money people are willing to spend if they offer to buy, and try to sell for more. Lower a bit if they aren't willing to spend as much, but try to stay in control of your prices.
  5. Buy more expensive sweets to sell at higher prices when your budget increases. This will increase your profits.
  6. Try to get a fan base not only in your year-group, but also both the higher and lower ones. e.g if you're in year 10, sell to years 7,8, and 9, and also 11.
  7. You should also try to record what you have sold, what profit you have made and so on. It helps.
  8. Sell things that you think people will want on that day (e.g if it is a boiling hot day then lemonade or water sell really well).
  9. Sell-Gum-at-School. These are easy to sell, and can produce a lot of money (especially if gum is banned in school) . If you can get away with selling gum for 10 cents apiece, and a pack of gum with 5 pieces costs 17 cents, you will make 50 cents, or a net profit of 33 cents easily.
  10. Sell things you will make most profit on (e.g if you buy a pack of 4 chocolates for $1 in a shop, then sell them for 50 cents each and you will make 100% profit).
  11. Get supplies/stock to sell at school. Go to shops like the 99c stores. They usually have good deals on sweets and they also sell big packs of sweets for cheap prices.
  12. Advertise. Tell everyone by word and mouth about your 'business', If you make a facebook page and it all goes downhill, you'll look like an idiot! Spread the word to all your mates and tell them to tell all their mates too!
  13. Know your friends and enemies. Try not to fall out with friends who know about your 'business', rumours could break out and your business will fold like a mum doing the ironing! Keep the sweets hidden, not somewhere obvious that people (who don't particularly like you) can find and steal for their personal gain.
  14. Be friendly to customers. Just like at restaurants, you don't see staff being rude, do you? Treat them right otherwise you could get a bad name for yourself and it won't work out!

Tips

  • If other people start selling the same things as you, lower your prices a bit, so people will buy off you instead of them. If you can't afford to lower your prices (e.g if you lowered them then you'd lose profit on the items) then go to different shops looking for good deals on them so you can sell them cheaper but still make decent profit.
  • Buy a lot of sweets. Selling just 2 lollipops won't do much in a day!
  • Try saving up money each day. (e.g if you make $20 one day, then put half of it in your bank (or somewhere where you can save it) and spend the rest on more stuff to sell). If you do that each day then you will end up with a lot of cash in your pocket.
  • If you are going to start selling new items and you're not sure if people will buy them, then just buy a few to test out if they sell well. If they do then buy more the next day.
  • You can sell candy outside of school as well, by setting up a stand and selling it. This may work better with bottled drinks, like water, tea, or soda as opposed to candy. You can also organize trades during school, and actually sell the products after school. This is a good idea if your school prohibits sales.
  • Get sweets that will attract attention or aren't commonly available. (For example, Really Fizzy Sherbet stuff.) People won't know where you got it, and thus you will have "cornered the market" on that item.
  • To advertise act like you are going to eat your candy and someone will see you and want to buy it.
  • The people mostly like to buy from you are family and friends. You can also ask co-workers and people you know personally.
  • Buy low, sell high. Also buy the candy in bulk so it's a lower price per unit, meaning you gain more profit.
  • Make your own sweets or buy them at a deal. Be wary of how much it costs even though it says 75% off!
  • If your school or certain teachers don't like people selling food on the premises, then don't do it - they may feel it's their right to take your profit and sweets.
  • Never hide the sweets in the front pocket of your backpack. Instead, bring a large wallet or purse. Hide the wallet or purse in the bottom of your bag. If you have multiple bags, stuff the sweets in the pocket of a large bag. If you have lockers, stuff your candy in the back.
  • Check different locations. One place could be selling 30 candy bars for 30 dollars while another for 10!

Warnings

  • Try not to tell too many people as they might try to sell sweets too. With more people selling sweets it will be a lot harder to make profit.
  • If you aren't allowed to sell in school but you still are, then don't do it, or do it when teachers are not around.
  • Know your class, don't sell to snitches.
  • if a teacher knows you are selling and they come for you, give your sweets and anything you are selling to someone you trust like a close friend, brother or sister or even your girlfriend or boyfriend. By doing this you will ensure that the teachers don't have any evidence that you where selling.
  • Make sure you don't make it obvious sweets are being sold, i.e. make sure that your whole form isn't eating sweets at the same time, otherwise it becomes pretty obvious to teachers what is going on.
  • If you do it where you can easily be seen then you will have to face the consequences.
  • If you make a decent amount of money from trades, avoid investing it all at once in new products, as you may not be able to sell them all and be left with a lot of candy and little money.
  • Ask your principal before doing this. Try not to get in trouble.
  • Never give anyone sweets if they want to pay you the next day--they probably won't give you the money.
