Set Side Switch Function On an iPad
In iOS 4.3 and later, iPad users can choose whether the side switch can lock rotation or mute sounds. This article will show you how to change the setting to whatever you prefer.
Steps
- Tap the Settings icon on the home screen.
- The first highlighted tab you should see should say General. Scroll down to Use Side Switch To. This option will only be visible on devices running iOS 4.3 or later.
- Tap to check your desired preference:
- Lock Rotation allows you to lock the orientation of the screen.
- Mute silences all sounds on the device.
- When you slide the side switch, it will now either lock rotation or mute all sounds, depending on your selected preference.
Tips
- The option can be changed at any time by going back to Settings.
- Locking rotation is great when your iPad keeps rotating the display on you when you do not want it to. This can sometimes happen when you are putting the iPad down on a side table to your left or right.
Warnings
- As mentioned before, this menu will not be visible on iPads running earlier versions of iOS. You can check to see what system version your device is running through iTunes, or by going to Settings > General > About.
