Set up an Arm Bar from the Closed Guard in Jiu Jitsu

The arm bar is one of the most common attacks used in sport jiu-jitsu. Although this setup uses the gi, this technique is very effective without the gi also.

Steps

  1. Get your opponent in a closed guard position. In this picture, the person in the white gi has the person in the red gi in his closed guard.
  2. Secure your opponent's right sleeve with your left hand. Cross grab his right elbow with your right hand. As you secure the arm, lift your hips off the floor to create more pulling force.
  3. Pull his arm over and crunch his legs and chest in.
  4. Open both legs at the same time and throw them up in a reverse crunch manner.
  5. Immediately close your legs and lock your opponent's shoulder up to keep him from escaping.
  6. Squeeze both your knees to the left and block your opponent’s face with his hand so he can’t defend.
  7. Place your left leg over your opponent’s face and extend your hips up while controlling the arm for the arm bar

Tips

  • Another point to keep the lock secure is to squeeze your knees around his bicep, it will make him work a lot harder to pull his arm away. Try to avoid locking your ankles while executing this lock.
  • In the last step, it should be mentioned that to secure the best position for the most effective lock, make sure that your opponent's thumb is up (if you're on your back and you look at his hand, imagine that he's giving you a thumbs up).
  • Do this technique with a good training partner, over and over again. Although this is a fairly basic technique, you will need to practice it numerous times to become proficient at doing it.
  • If your opponent does not tap, put one hand under their arm to create even more leverage.

Warnings

  • Be aware that the rest of the opponent's body is still there. Although you have the arm, he might still be able to attack you with other methods if he can withstand the pain.
  • All martial arts training assumes some risk. Do not attempt the above technique without the assistance of a qualified instructor.
