Snipe in Halo 2

Sniping is one of the most difficult things to do in Halo 2. It takes lots and lots of practice, but is one of the most important skills on live or multi-player.

Steps

  1. Learn how to zoom first. To zoom, click the right thumb stick. You have two zoom levels, 5X and 10X. Click once for 5X, twice for 10X. Click a third time, and you go back to the ordinary HUD.
  2. Figure out what look speed is good for you. Start out with a low speed. As you get better, you can turn it up. You can change the look speed in settings.
  3. When looking around while zoomed in, be very careful not to accidentally click the thumb pad. Doing so will either zoom you in too far, or zoom out, giving your target plenty of time to get away while you attempt to get a bead on them again.
  4. Try to look around with smooth, sweeping gestures. This will make it easier to stop on a target. Jerky movements will only make you less accurate.
  5. Only aim for the head once you have some serious skills or if the target is unaware and is not moving aim for the body and shoot twice.
  6. If the target is moving, put the reticle in their path and fire when they walk into it.
  7. If a target is jumping, don't bother trying to hit them while they are in the air; wait until they hit the ground between jumps because they will land in a predictable spot, and it takes a bit before they can do the second jump.
  8. If possible, shoot for fusion cores near the target. They don't move, and are often times more effective than a shot to the chest.
  9. If the target is in a ghost, don't try to hit them, aim for the gas tank. Then you can pick them off as they try to run away. Even if you do manage to hit them once, you probably won't hit them again to finish them off.
  10. If you are being sniped at while attempting to snipe them, move your body rather than your right stick. "Walk" your screen over until your target is in the reticule. This will simultaneously help to avoid their shots and help you aim.
  11. If you are close range sniping, keep your reticule at head level, so when you fire you are more likely to hit them in the head.
  12. Remember to reload anytime you aren't sniping. You don't lose any ammo when reloading, and you will regret it if you don't.
  13. If you are being shot at while trying to snipe, don't bother. You won't hit them while zoomed out if they are at range, so you should just switch to another weapon.
  14. When looking for targets, think of where other people are likely to be headed. Other Defeat a Halo 2 Jackal Sniper on Legendary will be wanting to get up high for a vantage point. If you're playing CTF, look around their flag; someone will probably be covering it. Also, talk to allies. They can tell you if they see someone. This can be very helpful
  15. Likewise, try not to be too obvious in choosing where you will snipe from. While certain places are nice to snipe from, They will be the first places others look when trying to pick off snipers. If you are in ascension and you immediately head for the sniper tower, you won't be there long. Try sniping from the shotgun stairs or from the banshee spawn.
  16. Try to blend in. Choose a darker primary color, and stick to the shadows. A yellow spartan is not very stealthy.
  17. Don't waste shots. An empty sniper rifle is not very helpful, and they are hard to come by on most maps, unless you are playing snipers.
  18. Use cover. It makes you harder to find.
  19. Have a good secondary weapon in case someone finds you. As you know, snipers are not good for close range.
  20. If possible, get a teammate to watch your back. Your motion detector is off when you're zoomed, as is your peripheral vision. Assassinating a sniper is easy if they're concentrating on something else.
  21. Try to move around when sniping. If you kill some one, move to a different spot, they will most likely look to kill you in that spot. Try to move around the battlefield so that your enemies will not be wary of your new sniping spot. Boom Headshot.
  22. If an enemy is coming towards you from a distance, and jumps to avoid being shot, aim at his body and when his head enters the crosshair, shoot. Headshot.

Tips

  • Watch the videos I linked on YouTube. I can't describe with words as well as seeing it in action will.
  • While the sniper rifle is a poor weapon to melee with (without extensive practice), it does have a lot of power behind a melee. Only use it this way unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • For the easiest sniping, change your look sensitivity to "1", but be aware that this is only good for sniping and makes close quarter fighting a nightmare.
  • Play on only sniper matches, or random weapons, (which gives you a sniper half the time anyway) preferable on a medium-large map like Ascension, which is excellent for sniping, as there are a few points where you can see most all of the map, and soon you'll be picking off opponents who are in midair from the man cannon. Playing a few of these rounds will help your skill TREMENDOUSLY!
  • If you think you've given your position away get out of there.
  • A low Sensitivity is better, since higher sensitivity makes a shot less accurate at times.
  • Find a friend or someone that will help you practice and play with you to get better.
  • If good enough, go up to an unknowing (or Knowing) opponent and get a no scope. Extremely difficult, but the outcome will make anyone happy.
  • Never go on the offensive with a sniper rifle.
  • AIM FOR THE HEAD! Head shots are instant kills.
  • Always carry a backup weapon in case your foes comes for you, preferably a sword or a shotgun!
  • Do not give away your position because the enemy will come for you.
  • Try to play more of a supporting role in the battle. Watch out for your teammates by covering them, helping in a fire fight, watching for enemies, and watching for other snipers. Remember your teammates will help you if you help them.

Warnings

  • This Wikihow was compiled assuming you have default controls.
  • Don't brag about your abilities. Someone better will come around and disabuse you of the notion. Besides, everyone will hate you.

Things You'll Need

  • An Xbox/Xbox 360
  • Halo 2
  • Xbox Live and/or friend to play with (assuming you have more than one controller).
  • A TV. Bigger is better, more so for snipers than other people. Seeing things is good, and it's easier to hit something that is easy to see. It's hard to snipe the pixel representing someone's head on a small TV.
  • Practice. These tips are helpful, but they won't help at all if you've never played halo before.
  • Good eyesight/glasses/contacts. Again, seeing things is good.
