Solve the Flash Mind Reader

Have you seen the Flash Mind Reader site on the internet and wondered how it really works? It's not as psychic as it looks. Now you can figure it out!

Steps

  1. Try it out. Go to The Flash Mind Reader and follow the instructions. Choose any 2-digit number. Add together both digits and then subtract the total from your original number. Find the symbol next to that number on the chart and concentrate on it, then click the crystal ball. Wow! It seems to be reading your mind!
  2. Look for patterns. The trick behind this apparent mind-reading is all in the number 9.
  3. Figure it out. Use the tips below to figure out which numbers the program uses each time to produce the next "psychic" symbol.
  4. Identify the numbers that follow the pattern. Check the list of numbers and their associated symbols on the Mind Reader site. Although the symbols change each time, these 9 numbers will always show matching symbols. Now click the crystal ball again and see which image is displayed. Wow! Now you seem to be reading its mind!
  5. Have fun playing psychic for your friends! Be sure to explain how you did it - after you wow them a few times, of course. Math can be so fun!

Tips

  • Any time you add the numbers of a two-digit number and then subtract that sum from the original number, there are only 9 possible answers.
  • As the 2-digit number goes down/up one, the sum of the two numbers it is made up of also goes down/up one, keeping the total exactly the same until you get into the next group of ten.
  • This works for single-digit numbers, too, because each single-digit number can be written as a 2-digit number with a 0 in the tens place. (09, 08, 07, etc.) It also means there are really ten possible answers. Can you figure out which number is the tenth answer?
  • Each group of ten 2-digit numbers ends up with an answer that follows a pattern based on the multiples of the number 9.

Warnings

  • Enjoying math too much might lead to more fun in school, better grades, and a career in some well-paying field. Proceed with caution!
